Iliad
The Iliad is a poem written
about a story of the Trojan War.
Two Princes named Hector and Paris were sent to Greece to form an alliance with the King. Hector was the older, stronger, and wiser of the two. Paris was young, weak, and a coward.
The king of Greece had a beautiful wife. Her name was Helen. She is also known as the face that sailed a thousand ships. Over the week the two prices were in Greece partying and having fun. Helen, the king’s wife, and Paris had fallen in love. At the end of the week, the princes headed back to Troy. But Paris had hidden Helen on the ship and took her back with them. This is where she gets her nickname. The king was so angry when he found that her wife had left, that he sent one thousand ships to search for her. Halfway home, Hector finds Helen hidden on the ship. The whole week of making the alliance was ruined. They made an enemy instead.
Achilles was a warrior from Greece that didn't wan to fight anone just for a girl. When he was young, his mother dipped him in a special river that made him almost invincible. She held him by his ankle so the only vulnerable spot was his ankle.
When the king found Paris, Hector, and Helen, Paris told the king not to start a war. He told him that he would fight the king; just the two of them and whoever won would get Helen. The king agreed. The day of the fight, everyone gathered around, including Helen to watch the fight. The king was much larger than Paris and was most likely going to win. The king had cut Paris’s leg and Paris went crawling to his brother like the coward he is. Then the king yelled to Helen. "This is what you left me for?! This coward?"
He went over to Hector and told him he was going to kill Paris because the fight was not over. The king goes to kill Paris and Hector protects him by killing the king. This of course made all of Greece mad. Then the Trojan War had started.
The people of Troy went back to their city. They were kept safe by their huge walls. The Greeks gathered their army though. One of their soldiers was Achilles’s cousin. Achilles didn’t want him to fight, but he fought anyway. While fighting, Hector of Troy sees Achilles's cousin. He kills him thinking that it was Achilles. This of course made Achilles angry. So he made a deal with Hector; similar to that of the King and Paris. They were to have a one on one fight. One of the countries was going to loose its best soldier. And Troy was that country. Achilles had killed Hector.
But the Trojans just stayed in their city, safe behind the wall. The Greeks tried and tried to get over, through, or under the wall of Troy, but they didn’t succeed. So they went back to Greece. There, they formed a plan; the Trojan Horse. The Trojans Horse was a large wooden horse the Greeks had built. They hid 10 of their best soldiers in it and put it right outside the gates of Troy. People of Troy saw it as surrender. Whenever someone won a war, the loosing country gave the winning country a gift. So the Trojans wanted to take it in the city, but Paris didn’t want to have it inside Troy. He wanted to burn it. But no one listened.
They brought it inside the walls and started the celebration. They partied all night. As soon as everyone was asleep because they were so exhausted from celebration, those ten soldiers came out from the horse. They opened the gate for the rest of the Greek army that had come back and had been waiting for them to open the gate. Greece obviously had the upper hand and was going to win. So Paris and Helen and the king and queen went underground to tunnels that led out of the city. But Achilles saw them and followed them. As soon as Paris saw Achilles he drew his bow and shot him in the ankle, which of course killed him. Paris and Helen left Troy safely, but the city got destroyed.
